Species, Cultivar and Seasonal Effects on Nodulation and Nitrogen Utilization of Spring Mediterranean Grain Legumes

Abstract Information on nitrogen economy of grain legumes during seed filling is critical for their sustainable cultivation in rainfed agroecosystems, but a comparable assessment different under the same growth conditions lacking. The purpose this study was to examine species, cultivar and seasonal effects nodulation accumulation, remobilization, utilization. Five [common vetch ( Vicia sativa L.), red pea Lathyrus cicera lentil Lens culinaris Medik), chickpea Cicer arietinum field Pisum sativum L.)], each represented by two cultivars, were grown years semiarid Mediterranean environment. There considerable environmentally induced differences among species nodulation, with maintaining sufficient number nodules (16 plant ‒1 ) nodule dry weight (57 mg even drier year (2015). Pre-podding accumulation varied particularly wetter (2014). Nitrogen translocation from vegetative parts seeds correlated pre-podding (r = 0.99, P < 0.01 2014 r 0.98, 2015). Interspecific efficiency enlarged drought, exhibiting highest (84%) lowest value (72%). Chickpea produced both had utilization (21 kg per N) year. positively harvest index negatively concentration at maturity. Most trait less evident within than between species. Overall, found outperform other terms efficiency.
